For much of the middle ages the town depended on the herring industry for its liveilhood but today the oil industry has taken over. Dunottar Castle is a famous local landmark to be found on a rocky headland about two miles south of the town. The fortress played a significant part in Scotland's history being held for the most part by the Earls Marischal of Scotland. The area is a notable bird sanctuary with thousands of birds.
