Caldicot was mentioned in Domesday and was a small farming community up to the middle of the 19th century when it expanded following the coming of the railways and shortly afterwards when the Severn Tunnel was completed. Caldicot Castle was built by the Earls of Hereford in the 12th century but gradually fell into disrepair before being restored in the 19th century. The castle and grounds are now open to the public and there are walks along the coastal path.
