Galashiels: Galashield is a border town on Gala Water, a tributary of the River Tweed, and well known for its textile industry. Its name is thought to derive from 'huts on Gala Water' and originally came into being to look after pilgrims on the way to Melrose Abbey. The town recieved its first charter in the 16th century and each year riders from the town process round the district in the Braw Lad's Gathering.
