Banbury is mentioned in Domesday as Banesberie with four mills and belonged to the Bishop of Lincoln. For much of the late Middle Ages it was a fierce bastion of Puritanism and nothing remains of the old cross mentioned in the nursery rhyme which was destroyed in 1602.
