Ashton-under-Lyne : Ashton-under-Lyne is a market town once part of Lancashire about four miles southeast of Oldham. Its name is thought to derive from 'settlement by ash trees'. The town received its first charter at the beginning of the 15th century and remained a farming community until the industrial revolution brought cotton manufacture and the town then prospered with its good communications.
