Didsbury is situated on the north bank of the River Mersey and was once part of Lancashire. The name probably derives from 'Dyddi's Burg' meaning 'Duddi's stronghold'. It remained a small farming community until the mid 19th century when the town's proximity to Manchester caused it to develop rapidly.
