Worthing is set just below the South Downs and has long been a popular resort with its pebble and sand beach, pier, theatres and museums. As with its more illustrious neighbour, Brighton, the hitherto small fishing village of Worthing expanded after a Royal visit in the late eighteenth century. Today it is a very busy tourist centre with many interesting places nearby to visit including Cissbury Ring to the south of South Downs Way, an old Iron-Age fort reoccupied in the fifth century, and Chanctonbury Ring to the north.
