Bideford : Abbotsham is to the southwest of Bideford which lies at the mouth of the Torridge and the town's sheltered position on the river made it a succesful port for many years and in the 16th century it was the third largest port in Britain. It eventually declined in the 18th century though the town today still has a busy harbour. The 13th century bridge that spans the river has 24 arches some of which are the original stonework and varying sizes.
