Barking has long been settled with Bronze-age and Roman remains being found and its name is thought to derive from early Saxon settlers. In the 16th century Barking Abbey was demolished and the lead used for repairs at Greenwich Palace across the river. The area is an important industrial and commercial centre but still with several parks and open spaces.
