Mere is a small town about four miles north of Gillingham close to the borders of Somerset and Dorset. It is an ancient settlement and the terraces around 13th century Castle Hill are thought to have been made for vines by the Romans. It borders the Salisbury Plain and is now by-passed by the A303.
