Westbury is mentioned in Domesday as Westberie and had eight mills its name probably deriving from 'western stronghold or fortified place'. It is believed to have a palace of the kings of Wessex. Nearby is Edington where King Alfred won his famous victory over the Danes in the ninth century. For many years the town was a centre for the wool trade and the manufacture of gloves and the market place is largely of Georgian origin.
The Westbury white horse is below the Iron Age hillfort on the edge of Bratton Downs and is the oldest of the Wiltshire horses.
