Swallowfield was mentioned as Soanesfelt in Domesday and had a Mill and five fisheries on the Thames. Its name possibly derives from 'Open land on the rushing stream' and by the 16th century was known as Swallofelde. The village lies close to the border with Hampshire about five miles south of Reading just off the main A33 Reading to Basingstoke Road. Swallowfield Park itself is about half a mile north-east of the village and is set in 25 acres of beautiful grounds with many specimen trees.
Today Reading is a modern university town and regional centre with extensive shopping facilities including the Oracle which includes a cinema village with restaurants and cafes and most high street names. Broad Street has John Lewis amongst other well-known stores.
