Lewes is the county town of East Sussex and is situated on the South Downs and the River Ouse about eight miles north-east of Brighton. It was mentioned in Domesday and belonged then to the Archbishop of Canterbury. It has an impressive castle dominating the surrounding countryside built by William de Warenne who also founded the Cluniac priory. Every November the town celebrates bonfire night in some style with spectacular torch-lit processions. The town has an attractive centre with many Georgian houses along the high street. To the west is the site of the 13th century Battle of Lewes where Simon de Montfort's barons defeated Henry III.
